British Association of Paper Historians Spring Meeting International Relations Room Institute of Historical Research University of London March 8, 2003 10am-4pm. The programme includes an analysis of Matthias Koops' book on the History of Papermaking; an explanation of how waste paper is recycled into premium quality newsprint, including a description of how the staples, glue, plastic and ink is removed; a talk about life as a paper conservator with the opportunity to bring along samples for discussion; and an introduction to the Original Society of Papermakers (OSP) and a re-enactment of negotiations between the Master Papermakers and the OSP. It is hoped that there will be time for a talk about Mill Tokens, a rare survivor from the Papermaking Industry. British Association of Paper Historians visit to Kew Economic Botany Collections, Royal Botanic Gardens, London, April 23, 2003, starts 11am. The visit will begin with a tour of the Collections, which comprise many thousands of botanical specimens and the famous Parkes Collection of paper, paper artefacts and bark. After the tour there will be the opportunity to visit the related exhibition at Kew's Museum No.1. This visit is for maximum of 12. Cost: UKP5 members, UKP10 non-members. (Collected on the day.)
