Environmental Monitoring of our Cultural Heritage: Sustainable Conservation Solutions Royal Museum Lecture Theatre Edinburgh, Scotland November 13-14, 2003 Call for papers: Deadline for abstracts: April 30, 2003 Deadline for text for final papers: June 30, 2003 The aim of the conference is to explore the key role played by environmental monitoring in developing sustainable conservation of historic buildings, structures, contents, finishes and fixtures. The conference will address the issues of environmental monitoring in libraries, archives, museums and galleries, historic houses, castles, abbeys and medieval wall paintings. A major objective is to examine the relationship between organisms, materials, environments and our cultural heritage. Particular emphasis will be laid on understanding environmental monitoring and control and deterioration to our Museums, Galleries, Archives, Libraries and Historic Monuments. The conference will assist in the development of multidisciplinary sustainable solutions to deal with the problems caused by deterioration in the built environment and on historical artefacts. The conference will focus on developing a better knowledge base for practitioners in conservation. This will be achieved by bringing together experts in the conservation of a range of different types of heritage artefact and buildings all of which are susceptible to the threats posed by biological, chemical and environmental pollution. Key note topics: The programme includes presentations from keynote speakers, poster presentations, and exhibition, followed by general discussions. Main topics will include: Understanding the Historic and Cultural Environment Environmental Monitoring Historic Artefacts and Fixtures Libraries and Archives Instrumentation and Technologies Diagnosis and Control Non-destructive Inspection Conservation Science Historic Wall Painting and Frescoes Indoor Air Quality and Health Museums and Galleries Sustainable Conservation Solutions Case Studies Exhibition Poster Session Abstracts not more than 250 words should be submitted by April 30, 2003 with an indication of the preference for oral or poster presentation. The organising committee reserves the right to designate papers as oral or poster. Notice of acceptance will be sent by 30th May 2003.
