The Public Record Office is the National Archive of the United
Kingdom and in particular of England and Wales.  As a leading source
of archival research material, we hold 167 kilometres of Government
and legal records from Domesday Book to modern Cabinet papers.

The Conservation Department, which is responsible for conserving and
preserving the records, is seeking a Conservation Manager to manage
a team of conservators and technicians ensuring that business plan
targets and objectives are met.

Although applicants must demonstrate relevant conservation knowledge
and skills concerning paper and parchment, the main criteria will be
their management skills and experience.

Main Duties

Specific responsibilities will include:

    *   Ensuring the effective administration and management of a
        team, including assisting in drawing up departmental
        business plans and monitoring team performance

    *   Training and developing team members

    *   Representing the department at seminars/conferences,
        presenting and publishing papers on conservation matters,
        maintaining and developing links in the conservation field .

    *   Providing guidance and advice on preservation/conservation
        techniques and methods to other PRO staff and  external
        bodies which will be seen as an authoritative opinion of the
        PRO.

    *   Carrying out conservation treatment as required, organising
        and reporting on condition surveys, researching and writing
        reports on the evaluation of different conservation methods.
        Person Specification

    1.  Significant experience of managing staff

    2.  Excellent management skills including organisational,
        administrative interpersonal and communication skills.

    3.  Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines and targets.

    4.  Willingness to develop skills and to promote and develop
        staff skills.

    5.  Relevant level of conservation knowledge and technical
        ability of paper and parchment.

Desirable

    1.  IPC, UKIC or SoA - accredited member of PACR (Professional
        Accreditation of Conservators - Restorers).

    2.  Project planning and management skills

    3.  IT skills, including ability to use Microsoft Office 2000

Length of Contract: Permanent
Salary: UKP19,313 - UKP22,778 pa (Band 3 Low)

Hours: In general, standard working hours apply, but for certain
posts and subject to the discretion and business needs of the
Office, a flexible working hours scheme (FWH) operates.  Staff
participating in this scheme will work 36 per week excluding meal
breaks.

Staff eligible for FWH are required to commence and finish duty
between the core times of 07:00 to 10:00 and 16:00 to 19:00 Monday
to Friday.  If applicable, Saturday working hours are between 8:50
and 17:15.  Contractual working requirements will be advised to all
staff members.

Probation: 12 month probationary period applies

Holidays: 22 days annual leave per calendar year, rising to 25 days
after 1 years' service rising to 30 days after 10 year's service,
plus 10.5 days public and privilege leave per annum.

Retirement Age: The standard age of retirement is 60 years.
