AIC Angels project

From: Craig Deller <craig>
Date: Monday, January 27, 2003
The 2003 Angels project has gotten off the ground early, with an
initial on-site meeting having taken place, to select the recipient
of next year's pro-bono work day. The 2003 annual AIC Angels project
will take place at the Washington Navy Yard, in Southwest
Washington, DC. on Wednesday, June 4th, 2003.

This site was selected by local Angels coordinators, Linda Blaser
and Michele Pagan, because of the diversity of the collections and
the opportunity for service at that site. Five entities at the Navy
Yard will be the recipients of the volunteer conservation services
next year: the Navy Museum, the Curator Branch, the Underwater
Archeology Branch, the Navy Art Gallery, and the Navy Department
Library.

Claire Peachey, conservator at the Navy's Underwater Archeology
Center, will be the lead on-site coordinator for the project. At
this point, the following conservation projects have tentatively
been identified as needing the services of next year's Angels:

    * The Navy Museum's collection: survey and housing of many
flags and many uniforms, that are now both in storage and on
        exhibit.

    * The Navy Department Library: books, paper, maps, scrapbooks,
photos, postcards and bound volumes that suffer from poor
storage and active deterioration (problems include mold
        growth and tape staining.)

    * The Curator Branch: many Navy-related military accessories
and personal accoutrements, such as swords, metals, and
letters that vary in fragility, and require custom
        re-housing and mount-making.

    * The Navy Art Gallery: rebacking of the Navy paintings
collection, and a training session on non-adhesive hinging
of works of art on paper and the subsequent re-hinging of
        artwork and individual documents.

    * Condition assessments and rehousing is needed in all areas,
along with suggestions for re-designing storage areas.

Volunteers in all specialties will be needed for this next Angels
project. Team leaders will need to volunteer soonest, so that
advance planning and ordering of supplies can commence.

Please contact Linda Blaser <lblaser [at] folger__edu> or Michele Pagan
<michele_johnpagan [at] yahoo__com> to be part of this very exciting and
worthwhile activity. Previously experienced Angels are highly
encouraged to make a return descent, and fledgling angels are always
supremely welcome to come and earn their wings!
