Position at Tate Gallery

From: Sally Spenceley <sally.spenceley>
Date: Thursday, January 16, 2003
Paintings Conservator
Tudor-Stuart Catalogue
Salary: c. UKP16,500 (four days per week)
Two year fixed term contract

Tate is preparing a major collections catalogue of the gallery's
holdings from the 16th and 17th centuries. It is a high profile and
important project, especially as this is the first time that every
entry in a Tate Catalogue will include a section on the materials
and techniques used.

Your role will be central to the work on the catalogue, as you will
be co-ordinating the flow of paintings into the conservation studio
for examination, then helping to compile records of these
examinations, and to prepare samples for examination and analysis.
This will require a high degree of organisation and extensive
liaison with registrars, collections curators and art handlers. We
will also expect you to assist with the examination of these
paintings, identifying any cases where urgent conservation work is
needed and contributing to remedial work. Due to display commitments
and the schedules of researchers, you will also be required to
assist with work on new acquisitions and with in-house displays.

You must have a recognised qualification in Paintings Conservation
or equivalent training and experience. An interest in technical art
history is essential as well. Alongside this specialist expertise
you will need strong organisational skills, demonstrated by your
success on a previous project or programme of work. PC literacy is a
must, with Word and Excel skills particularly important.
