Removal of pressure sensitive tapes and tape stains
Target group: Paper conservators

    Lectures on invention, evolution, degradation and removal of
    rubber-based and synthetic polymer-based pressure sensitive
    tapes. During 10 practical lessons identification of tapes,
    defining the degree of degradation, testing for dwell time and
    solubility parameter, advanced carrier and adhesive removal
    mechanically, by solvent immersion and by local treatments,
    stain removal on the suction table, the suction disk and using
    poultices, are carried out. Case histories, computer and
    video-demonstrations are included.

Conservation of digital prints

    An increasing number of graphic documents is being generated
    digitally, including photographic images, fine art prints,
    reproductions, advertising posters, letters, prints, journals,
    office documents, price labels, and product packaging. In
    addition the technology of digital printing has developed at a
    very rapid pace over the last 20 years and it can be very
    difficult to keep up to date with the newest trends. As digital
    prints constitute a major part of our current and future social
    and cultural heritage, it will be important in the long term to
    gain an understanding of their structure, materials and
    long-term stability. This goal is based on our ability to
    differentiate between different output technologies.

    In this workshop lectures will be combined with hands-on
    sessions on identification, using a large sample collection and
    experimental treatments. Topics covered include the history and
    applications of digital printing, the technology and materials
    of the processes available today, the identification of digital
    prints, the deterioration of materials found in digital prints
    such as substrates, colourants and coatings and finally the
    preservation of digital prints, including exhibition, storage,
    treatment and disaster recovery.

"State of the art" developments in ceramics and glass conservation

    This continuous professional development course is designed to
    explore relevant advances by conservation scientists, and by
    researchers in industry and universities. The course is designed
    to present a detailed overview of the science behind key
    processes, but participants need not have a strong scientific
    background. The course will involve lectures and practical
    sessions on: adhesives, coatings and consolidants; additives
    (including fillers, dyes and pigments, diluents, flow promotors
    and flexibilisers); the importance of refractive index for glass
    and porcelain repair. The course will also cover topics of
    special relevance to individual participants. Case histories and
    visits to the research laboratories of the ICN are included.

Analytical techniques in conservation
Target group: Mid-career conservators (all disciplines) and
entry-level conservation scientists.

    This course is designed to provide participants with an updated
    general overview of a number of important analytical techniques
    used in conservation, including their general principles and
    their application to specific conservation needs. Several of
    these techniques may be directly applied by trained
    conservators; others require sophisticated instrumentation and
    are normally carried out by experienced conservation scientists.
    The goal is not to become conservation scientists after the
    course, but to provide information on the importance and
    practical application of these tools, their scope and
    limitations, and the kind of information to be expected as a
    result. The course proposes to answer the following
    conservator's questions: when would I use it, why would I use
    it, and what information will I gain that will help in making
    conservation treatment decisions.

    The course has as its goal to contribute to a better and
    critical understanding of current conservation research
    literature and thus to an improved dialogue between conservators
    and conservation scientists. Participants will be selected from
    the pool of applicants and notified of their acceptance by June
    2003.

Aerosols in the field of paper conservation
Target group: Paper conservators

    The introduction includes the presentation of properties and
    physical behaviour of Aerosols that are used in paper
    conservation. The penetration behaviour of aqueous consolidation
    solutions for pigmented surfaces and the fixation of water
    sensitive dyes will be highlighted to prepare for the practical
    part of the workshop. The participants will be introduced to the
    existing misting devices and will practice on prepared dummies
    to be consolidated and to be fixed including the treatment of
    ink corroded papers.

    A variety of adhesives with different concentrations for
    consolidation and the advantages and disadvantages of different
    misting devices will be discussed and evaluated.
