Conservation Vacancies Position at British Library London c.UKP16,525 to a maximum of UKP24,334 The Collection Care department of the British Library <URL:http://www.bl.uk> is responsible for the preservation, conservation, storage and security of the collections. The department, which comprises some 200 staff, currently has a number of vacancies in its Conservation Studios at Bloomsbury, on the British Museum site and at St. Pancras. Conservator Working in a small team of conservators at St. Pancras, you will be required to carry out conservation treatments to a wide range of archival material including manuscripts, books, archives, maps, prints and drawings, illuminations on parchment and paper, papyrus, wax and lead seals. You should be able to work without constant supervision and will be encouraged to develop a range of professional skills and knowledge on the items on which you work. You will also need to be able to manage your work to ensure that production deadlines are met, communicate effectively with people at all levels, and be able to keep clear, detailed and accurate records of all treatments undertaken. Applicants need to have either a formal qualification in conservation or allied subject, and/or have approximately 4 years' experience working in paper conservation, preferably with manuscripts, outside college. They should also be willing to learn new techniques and treatments, have a high level of manual dexterity and some knowledge of the chemistry, properties and behaviours of a variety of organic and inorganic materials. PO1-5-2003 Conservator Working in a small team of conservators at St. Pancras, you will be required to carry out conservation treatments to a wide range of library materials including illuminated manuscripts, maps, prints, drawings and books. You will be required at times to support the library's exhibition and loan programme by assisting in the preparation and mounting of items. You should be able to work without constant supervision and will be encouraged to develop a range of professional skills and knowledge on the objects on which you work. You will also need to be able to manage your work to ensure that production and exhibition deadlines are met, communicate effectively with people at all levels, and be able to keep clear, detailed and accurate records of all treatments undertaken. Applicants need to have either a formal qualification in conservation or allied subject, and/or have approximately 4 years' experience working in paper conservation outside college, preferably with manuscript material in a variety of formats. Experience of working with Asian collections would be beneficial as would practice in the preparation and mounting of objects for exhibition and loan. Working in a small team of book conservators, you will be required to carry out conservation treatments on a wide range of archival material, mainly involving western printed books and manuscripts. You should be able to work without constant supervision and will be encouraged to develop a range of professional skills and knowledge of the items you work with. You will also need to be able to manage your work to ensure that production deadlines are met, communicate effectively with people at all levels, and be able to keep clear, detailed and accurate records of all treatments undertaken.
