Conservators Glasgow Museums Glasgow Museums are a department within Cultural and Leisure Services, Glasgow City Council, Scotland. The City of Glasgow owns one of the richest collections in Europe, displayed in 13 museums across the city. Venues include the Burrell Collection, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, St Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art and an award winning outreach service known as The Open Museum. We are currently undertaking a major refurbishment of Kelvingrove and building a new open store, that will house 200,000 objects from the collection and be a new visitor attraction for the city. In order to supplement the existing team and with a view to providing an efficient and effective service for colleagues and visitors, the conservation section is increasing its professional, specialist staff by recruiting the following nine posts: Senior Conservator (preventive conservation); 4 posts in the Art Group and 4 posts in the Objects Group. These permanent posts offer an exciting opportunity to contribute to capital projects, facilitate the exhibition programme and work on rolling programmes of treatment and collection care. Senior Conservator (preventive conservation) Vacancy Ref. 14/R01/09 Salary: UKP24,545 - UKP26,801 Glasgow Museums views preventive conservation as an essential element in its conservation strategy. This post requires an enthusiastic and flexible conservation professional, with particular interest in preventive conservation, to work with venues and on projects including the 'The Open Museum' and the refurbishment of Kelvingrove. Managing one other and working as a team you will develop and maintain integrated pest management, disaster response planning and a programme of environmental monitoring and interpretation. You will provide specialist advice on materials and standards for conservation, display and storage and co-ordinate a programme of training to improve preventive conservation awareness and involvement by all museum staff. Relevant qualifications and experience of successful project management are essential. Art Group Conservator - 2 posts Vacancy Ref: 14/P12/03 Salary: UKP21,536 - UKP23,459 Assistant Conservator - 2 posts Vacancy Ref: 14/P12/04 Salary: UKP16,673 - UKP18,296 Applicants will have skills and experience in one of the following areas: Paintings; Paper, interested in collection care, social history and ephemeral material ; Sculpture and 3D artworks, interested in traditional and contemporary sculpture/3D artworks; Furniture and frames with an interest in construction techniques, surface finishes and gilding. Object Group Conservator - 1 post Vacancy Ref: 14/R01/05 Salary: UKP21,536 - UKP23,459 Assistant Conservator - 3 posts Vacancy Ref: 14/R01/06 Salary: UKP16,673 - UKP18,296 Applicants will have skills and experience in one of the following areas: Transport and Technology: Archaeology and Ethnography; Arm, Armour and Metalwork; Social History Collections or Decorative Arts. All the above posts require enthusiastic and flexible conservators with experience of assessing and analysing object condition, carrying out and managing conservation treatments and providing specialist advice on exhibitions, projects and loans. Experience of designing and constructing object mounts would be an advantage. Conservator posts will additionally be required to manage conservation projects. Successful applicants will have experience, skills and knowledge in one of the above stated areas and should clearly identify their specialism when applying.
