Subject: PARS Reformatting Discussion Group
Pars Reformatting Discussion Group Featuring Nancy Gwinn, Director, Smithsonian Institution Libraries Pennsylvania Convention Center, Room 102-A Saturday January 25, 2003 2-4 pm [Pre]Serving Two Masters? Are you microfilming and digitizing the same material? Are you wondering if both will always be necessary? Thinking of digitizing only but wondering if it's safe? Some institutions have decided that the creation of digital files is a valid preservation option, making it no longer necessary to create analog microfilm backups; some would like to provide digital access without abandoning microforms; others insist that digitization is only an access medium and continue to microfilm research materials for preservation purposes. Is it now possible to declare that a high-quality digital file is a preservation master? If so, why? If not, why not? What's your current position on these issues? Please join Nancy Gwinn, Director, Smithsonian Institution Libraries, in open discussion about these reformatting issues at the Midwinter ALA/ALCTS PARS Reformatting Discussion Group session on Saturday, January 25, 2003 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Pennsylvania Convention Center, Room 102-A.
