Perhaps the mechanisms behind this might be similar to those
involved in stain removal using attapulgas clay (Sepiolite).  It is
used very efficiently in stain removal on a variety of materials. It
makes a wonderful aqueous poultice but also can be used dry to
efficiently draw out solvents from porous materials.
