Call for papers--wall paintings

Preliminary Call for Papers / Contributions
UKIC Stone and Wall Painting Section
Symposia on Secular Wall Paintings
intended start date, Autumn 2003

The UKIC Stone and Wall Painting Section are planning a series of
symposia devoted to the history and conservation of secular wall
paintings. From humble domestic cottages to stately homes, from
small town halls to major public institutions, there is a virtually
unbroken tradition for painted decoration within buildings, which
collectively offer great insight into both our social and art
historical heritage.

Individual sessions will combine presented papers with ample time
for discussion, and there may be scope for associated site visits.
While it is intended to loosely group papers by historical period,
it is intended that the sessions will combine thematic topics, case
studies, and recent research into the history, techniques, and
conservation issues relating to wall paintings in secular buildings.

It is hoped that this forum will bring together conservators,
historians, vernacular architectural groups and architects as a
means of increasing our understanding and appreciation of these
often-unrecognised works of art.

Abstracts (approximately one side of A4) are being solicited on the
following themes:

    * regional or period specific research
    * thematic studies (subject, style, etc)
    *   individual case studies
    * research into original materials and techniques
    * conservation projects, including issues of programming,
        legislative controls and resources

It is intended that pre-prints of all presented submissions would be
distributed as part of each symposium, with the possibility of a
collated publication following the series.

The deadline for the first round of submitted abstracts is 28
February 2003, and should be sent to:
