The Iowa State University Library seeks applications and nominations
for the position of Head of Preservation Department, a full-time,
12-month, tenure track faculty appointment.  The Head of the
Preservation Department manages a well-established preservation
program for the University Library's general and special
collections.  Resources include a state-of-the-art conservation
facility.  This position leads a team of 8 FTE library assistants
and a professional conservator in conservation treatment, binding
and shelf preparation, preservation reformatting, preservation
education, and a developing digitization program.

Responsible for evaluation and implementation of new technologies
for the improvement and effectiveness of the preservation program.
Manages the preservation budget. Collaborates with other library
units in setting preservation priorities and in disaster
preparedness planning and response.  Participates in preparation of
grant proposals related to preservation.  In addition, the
successful candidate will represent the library's preservation
interests to external groups including contractual preservation
services and potential donors and grantees. Reports to the Assistant
Director for Technical Services.

Required Qualifications: ALA-accredited MLS or an equivalent
advanced degree in conservation. Knowledge of preservation practices
and techniques as demonstrated through previous experience and/or
successful completion of preservation coursework or a formal
preservation program. Familiarity with current trends in
preservation.  Evidence of successful managerial and organizational
skills, including experience with budget management and supervision.
Must have excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication
skills, and a proven ability to work in a collaborative, team-based
and dynamic environment.  ASSISTANT PROFESSOR:  Potential for
meeting promotion and tenure standard of excellence in scholarship;
ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR:  Record of excellence in scholarship with
national recognition of contributions to the discipline. Preferred
Qualifications:  Knowledge of digital applications for library
preservation, including knowledge of digital reformatting
techniques; knowledge of collection survey techniques; evidence of
successful experience obtaining and administering grants.

Salary/Benefits:  Salary competitive and dependent upon
qualifications.  TIAA/CREF, excellent group medical, dental and life
insurance; 24 annual working days vacation, and 18 annual days sick
leave.
