Edge of old oil on canvas painting

Problem: Edge that is the canvas fabric is nailed and stapled to the
stretcher frame, looks very weak. Is there a way to protect the edge
of a canvas oil painting, from the wood frame?  Is there something I
can line or paint onto the wood frame so the acids in the wood will
not harm the canvas? Thanks for your help,
