Date: Tuesday, October 29, 2002
Frames and Furniture Conservator, Band 2,
National Gallery of Victoria
2 year fixed term position.
Salary: $30,399 - $35,000 + 9% employer superannuation contribution.
Position to commence: January, 2003.

The National Gallery of Victoria is Australia's oldest and
pre-eminent public art gallery. The NGV is entering an exciting
period with the recent opening of the Ian Potter Centre: NGV
Australia, and the reopening of the completely refurbished St Kilda
Road premises in late 2003.

The NGV is seeking a qualified conservator to join the Frames and
Furniture section of the NGV Conservation Department, which employs
over 20 conservators and support staff. The Frames and Furniture
section plays an important role in the redevelopment programmes with
the conservation treatment of frames and furniture as well as the
manufacture of reproduction frames.

The successful candidate will possess tertiary qualifications in the
conservation of cultural materials specializing in frames, furniture
or objects, or a related field, or have equivalent professional
training. They will have demonstrated practical experience in the
conservation of highly valuable and irreplaceable items, including
frames and furniture, and have knowledge of preventive conservation
measures for these items. They will have the ability to work under
limited supervision and as part of a team, and possess
well-developed interpersonal and communication skills. Ideally the
person will have practical experience in the traditional
ornamentation and gilding of picture frames.

The position will initially be located in the Frames and Furniture
Conservation studio at the NGV temporary facilities in North
Melbourne and is scheduled to relocate to a new purpose-built
conservation studio at NGV International, St Kilda Road, Southbank,
in April 2003.
