The Boston Athenaeum

The Library of the Boston Athenaeum is seeking a Chief Conservator
responsible for the comprehensive conservation program for its
renowned collections.  He or she reports to the Head of Technical
Services and works closely with the Director and Librarian and
fellow senior members of the staff.  The Athenaeum has recently
built a state-of-the-art conservation laboratory in its newly
renovated and expanded building.

Responsibilities:

    *   Supervise and review work of conservation department staff
        of four FTEs

    *   Supervise implementation of the Library's Strategic
        Preservation Plan and update it as appropriate

    *   Work closely with the Director and Librarian, Director of
        Development, and Friends of Conservation to identify funding
        needs and opportunities; participate in presentations and
        grant writing

    *   Perform and document appropriate conservation treatments for
        the maintenance and preservation of the library collections

    *   Conduct and/or oversee condition surveys, develop
        specifications for in-house and external treatments, and
        oversee the preparation of materials for reformatting

    *   Develop and oversee departmental budget

    *   Lead the Disaster Recovery Team, and monitor the Library's
        disaster preparedness

    *   Establish an internship and volunteer program

    *   Coordinate preservation/conservation educational sessions
        for staff and readers

    *   Oversee and encourage the professional development of
        members of the Conservation Department

    *   Help coordinate conservation and exhibition needs with
        curators, and oversee safe exhibition and art handling
        practices

Qualifications:

    *   Significant conservation and managerial experience; Master's
        degree preferred

    *   Extensive knowledge of book and paper conservation Strong
        communication and organizational skills with ability to
        motivate and lead one's colleagues and to represent
        conservation policies and needs to a broad community

    *   Benefits: Fifteen days paid vacation, 13 paid holidays,

        experience.
