Theorems (paintings)

I am a student at the Conservation Center at New York University and
am looking for an appropriate way to remove a Theorem Painting from
the wood board to which it is glued, most likely with an Elmers-type
PVA.  The acidity of the wood is causing great distress to the silk
velvet, prohibiting separation of the two with a scalpel.  Other
possibilities that we are considering are prying the wood down from
the reverse or swelling the glue from the front. Any insight or
suggestions on the matter would be greatly appreciated.
