Position at V&A

From: Mark Lagan <m.lagan>
Date: Thursday, September 19, 2002
Head of Conservation
Victoria and Albert Museum
Up to UKP55,386 per annum

The V&A, Britain's national museum of art and design and one of the
greatest museums of decorative arts in the world, is concerned to
broaden access, and is at the forefront of developing new and active
ways to engage new audiences, overcoming cultural and physical
barriers to wider public involvement. Cross-Museum projects and
activities are central in the delivery of access priorities.

The Conservation Department, which currently employs around 50
full-time staff, is part of the newly formed Collection Services
Division, which also incorporated Exhibitions, Photo Studio,
Records, Registrar and Technical Services. Together, these
departments provide much of the expertise and resource needed to
achieve the Museum's ambitious public programme of exhibitions,
gallery openings, publications, small displays and loans.

As Head of Conservation, you will organise and direct programmes of
practical and preventive conservation, research and training to meet
both current and long-term conservation needs of the V&A, and will
work with the other Heads of Department and the Director of the
Division to provide an integrated and streamlined service to the
Museum.

You should be educated to degree level in conservation or a relevant
subject and have a strong track record of conservation or
collections management experience in a major institution with
experience of managing professional staff and the ability to apply
sound business, financial and risk management principles. A track
record of proven success in delivery to time and budget is also
essential along with a high level of PC skills.
