The National Gallery of Victoria is Australia's oldest and
pre-eminent public art gallery.  It possesses what is generally
acknowledged as the most outstanding collection of fine art in the
region and one which ranks with major collections throughout the
world.

The NGV is entering an exciting period with the scheduled opening of
the new Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia at Federation Square in
late 2002 and the reopening of the completely refurbished St Kilda
Road premises in late 2003. Ambitious and exciting programmes of
fashion and textile exhibitions are planned for both venues.

We are seeking a suitably experienced and qualified person for the
position of Senior Conservator of Textiles to join a very active and
highly professional conservation department consisting of over 20
conservators and support staff.  Working with the Chief Conservator
as part of the conservation department management team, and liasing
with Deputy Directors and Curators, they will be responsible for
carrying out a programme of treatments of Australian and
International fashion and textile items of the highest importance
and managing the textiles conservation section of the NGV
Conservation Department.

The successful candidate will possess tertiary qualifications in
conservation of cultural materials specializing in fashion and
textiles or equivalent professional training.  They will be a
recognized leader in this specialty with extensive practical
experience and capable of carrying out treatments of the utmost
complexity on important collections.  They will have a demonstrated
ability to train and supervise others and well developed
interpersonal and communication skills.

The position will initially be located in a dedicated textile
conservation lab already established at the NGV temporary facilities
in North Melbourne and is expected to relocate to a new dedicated
textile conservation space at the NGV.International located on St
Kilda Road at Southbank in 2003.
