Registration begins at 10.00. Sessions will start at 10.30, and
finish at 16.30.

This course is for conservators, archivists, historians and anyone
who works with paper artefacts, documents, or works of art on paper,
who need to have some knowledge of the make-up and origin of
individual sheets of paper, for the purposes of conservation,
attribution or dating.

Course leader: Peter Bower, paper historian and forensic paper
analyst, specialising in the examination and analysis of papers for
purposes of dating, attribution, authentication and usage.

Course Objective:

    To introduce participants to the range of analytical techniques
    and methods used to determine the origin, composition and date
    of sheets of paper. It will include methods that do not need
    sophisticated equipment. Learning Outcomes

    A better understanding of paper through a knowledge of paper
    evaluation techniques

    An understanding of the importance of using these techniques in
    combination with each other.

Delegates are encouraged to bring examples of papers for
identification.

Programme features:

    Methods of paper manufacture

    Analysing individual paper sheets according to the fibres used,
    their processing, type and construction of the mould or machine
    wire upon which the paper is formed, finishing, sizing
    techniques, watermarks

    Examining papers using some of the techniques discussed above.
