    Introductory talks cover the use of the microscope, the
    structure of plants and the identification of plant materials by
    the evaluation of their microscopical characteristics. Softwoods
    and hardwoods are studied using the Princes Risborough keys for
    wood identification. Differences between trunk wood and root
    wood are considered. Two of the five days are devoted to the
    preparation and identification of tree roots, modern timbers,
    collapsed/waterlogged wood, charcoal and veneers. The course is
    suitable for conservators in art and archaeology, furniture
    restorers and forensic scientists. It is also a useful
    introduction to the identification of wood fibres in paper.

Identification of Plant Fibres

    This course considers the identification of plant materials by
    the evaluation of their microscopical characteristics and the
    structure of plants from which fibres are obtained. Techniques
    used to prepare fibre samples will be practised. Methods for the
    identification of raw fibre and fibres in artefacts will be
    developed. The course is suitable for conservators in art and
    archaeology, for those studying textiles or artists' canvases
    and for forensic scientists.

Making High Quality Electroform Replicas
Tutor: Benner Larsen

August 26-30, 2002

    This course held at Benner Larsen's studio teaches high-quality
    electroforming for museum exhibitions, research, education,
    reconstruction and completion. Participants practise making
    silicone rubber moulds, preparation for deposition and joining
    and finishing by making electroform replicas of pre-selected
    antiquities. There are also case studies and lectures on the
    theory of electrodeposition. Extremely reasonably priced
    accommodation is available a short walk from the studio
