Through the generosity of Eleanor McMillan, the Smithsonian
Institution Archives has established the position of the McMillan
Conservator. This two-year position is for a paper conservator to
work with the diverse holdings of the archives of the Smithsonian
Institution. The incumbent will serve as a junior conservator
within the Smithsonian Archives to provide expertise in the
preservation and conservation of archival documents with an emphasis
on paper-based materials, and to be knowledgeable of the
conservation issues surrounding bound materials, photographs, film
and magnetic media. Applicants should have a graduate degree in
conservation or equivalent training, and demonstrated work
experience in archives or special collections. In addition, the
candidate should be able to work flexibly in different environments
and work situations.

The McMillan Conservator will work under the supervision of the
Preservation Manager to develop a conservation program open to all
archives at the Smithsonian and to undertake conservation and repair
of archival materials at an offsite conservation laboratory in
Suitland, MD. The types of materials that the incumbent will work
on include paper, maps, architectural drawings, photographs,
scrapbooks, and scientific illustrations. The range of activities
will include surveys and condition reports, preventive rehousing,
and increasingly complex conservation treatments.

The temporary appointment will be made at the IS 09 level ($38,406
per annum) and includes benefits. The candidate should send a
letter expressing their interest and abilities, and a current resume
with references to the address below. Application deadline is June
10, 2002. For more information on the position, please contact
