The Library of Congress invites applications for five Senior
Conservator vacancies. (called Librarian/Preservation Specialists in
the official LC announcement). These positions will be filled at the
GS 11 and GS 12 levels depending on applicant's knowledge, skills

Senior Conservator positions - GS- 11 and 12
Opening Date--April 29, 2002
Closing Date--May 31, 2002

Announcement Number: 020080 (GS-11) and 020081 (GS-12)
Salary Range: GS-11 $46,469 - $60,405. The position description
number for this position is 012365

Salary Range: GS-12 $55,694 - $72,400. The position description
number for this position is 012366

Type of appointment: Indefinite not to exceed three (2 positions) to
five years (3 positions). All are non-supervisory, bargaining unit
positions.

This position is located in the: Conservation Division, Preservation
Directorate of Library Services, Library of Congress, Washington, DC

Brief Description of Duties:

GS-11: Performs duties related to the conservation of library and
archival materials. Exercises care to ensure that government
property, especially library collection material, is properly
handled and kept secure to avoid loss or damage. Surveys the
preservation needs of the collections, identifies individual items
and categories of materials needing preservation, and provides
conservation treatment of materials where required. Analyzes,
evaluates, and organizes information and materials in various media
for preservation needs. Maintains liaison or communicates with
individuals both within and outside the organization. Professional
contacts are with curators and technical specialists in the
Divisions, supervisors, library staff, other national libraries,
library and information networks, experts in government agencies,
associations, the private sector, and/or research groups.

GS-12: Prepares plans for conservation treatment utilizing a high
level of technical knowledge of preservation and conservation,
materials, fabrication of and specification of housings for library
and archival materials. Assures that all conservation treatment and
rehousing is efficient and meets specified deadlines for reporting.
Analyzes, evaluates, organizes, and disseminates information and
materials in various media for quality, content and effectiveness.
Maintains liaison or communicates with individuals both within and
outside the organization. Professional contacts are with
supervisors, library staff, other national libraries, library and
information networks, information centers, experts in government
agencies, associations, the private sector, and/or research groups.
Meets with curatorial staff, analyzes questions and requirements;
suggests strategies for preservation of collections and evaluates
resources.
