Northern light

The Rijksmuseum will undergo a major renovation in the coming years.
Part of this scheme is a new building which will not only house the
Rijksmuseum conservation studios but also the scientific labs and
studios for the conservation training course of the Instituut
Collectie Nederland (the Netherlands Cultural Heritage Institute).

As the building will have limited north facing walls, northern light
will also be provided by means of a shed roof (sawtooth), with
windows facing north. We are very interested in hearing from
conservators who have experience with this kind of roof light. Does
it provide good quality daylight? Are there specific building
requirements necessary? What are the disadvantages? Your comments
will be very much appreciated.
