Course on chemistry for conservators

The Johns Hopkins University (JHU)Preservation Department will
sponsor another weeklong Chemistry course, Chemistry for
Conservators, taught by David Dorning of West Dean College, United
Kingdom. The daytime course will be offered the week of August
26-30, 2002 on the JHU Homewood Campus in Baltimore, Maryland,
United States.

The course is designed as an introduction to chemistry for the
practicing book or paper conservator who has not had specific
training in chemistry and is also open to those who need a
refresher. It will include both lecture and laboratory exercises.
The following topics will be covered: Day 1: The molecular view of
materials; Basic chemistry. Day 2: Polymers, adhesives and
consolidants; Cleaning and organic solvents. Day 3: Degradation of
Materials; Catalysts, enzymes and rates of reaction; Energy, light
and environment. Day 4: Molarity, acids and bases; Deacidification
of paper. Day 5: Skin materials and tannins; Materials testing.

David Dorning has served as Science Tutor to Conservation and
Restoration courses, coordinator of Conservation Studies, and Head
of Book Conservation at West Dean College. He also serves as
assessor for the Society of Archivists Conservators Training Scheme.

The cost for tuition (includes lab fees and course materials) is
$600.00. The course is limited to 20 participants and will be filled
in the order deposit checks are received. A deposit of $250.00 must
be received by May 24, 2002 in order to reserve a spot. Deposits
will not be refunded unless another participant is found to fill the
canceled spot. If fewer than 10 participants register by June 3, the
course will be cancelled and deposits returned. Confirmation, along
with information about local lodging will be sent to those admitted
to the course. Final payment will be due June 28, 2002. Send checks
made payable to Johns Hopkins University along with name, address,
