Conservation Framing Workshop for Commercial Framers
June 25, 2002
Burlington House, London
Tutor: Graeme Storey

This one-day workshop is tailored to the needs of commercial framers
who wish to learn more about practical conservation framing and
mounting techniques. Others interested in the subject are also
welcome. The training and work of conservators (what they do and
why) will be briefly covered. Visible signs of deterioration (ie
what to look for when examining customers' artworks) will also be
discussed. Serious damage is caused to artworks by poor quality
materials and techniques; the workshop will look into this.
Participants will also be shown the different types of mount board
and hinging materials. Details of materials suppliers and
non-damaging techniques will be provided. Practical demonstrations
of paste-making and hinge-cutting will take place, with the
opportunity for individual practice. There are considerable
advantages to the commercial framer in building a working
relationship with a conservator. Details of how to contact local
specialist conservators will be available. There will be time for
questions throughout the day. Coffee, a sandwich lunch and tea will
be included. Cost: UKP60 before 18 May--UKP70 after. Contact the
IPC office for more details:
