Choices and strategies for preservation of the collective memory

    Directorate General on Archives of Italy,
    Center for Restoration and Preservation Technology, Rome,
    State Archives of Bolzano,
    Province of Bolzano, the Historical Archive of the Province
    Bolzano.

The conference languages will be: Italian, German, and English, with
simultaneous translation.

Conference theme: Archival and library institutions are making great
efforts to increase awareness of the importance of preservation of
documents. A broad survey showed, however, that many public and
private institutes do not yet have staff trained in preservation.
Preservation covers many activities, from storage to digitization.
Buildings should be well equipped, and the advantages of the new
media should be explored. The conference will deal with the many
aspects of preservation.

It will have plenary sessions on:

    *   risk assessment
    *   choices for the preservation of originals
    *   scientific research and preservation
    *   substitutes for access
    *   premises and the restoration of historical buildings and
        parallel sessions on: technical and scientific solutions
    *   experience in book and documental restoration
    *   migrating information and training and networks
    *   access projects.

A poster session and an exhibition will be held on-site; interested
parties are invited to contact the conference secretary before 30
April about possible participation.

The final session of the conference will be a Round table of chair
persons, presenting conclusions and recommendations.

Audience: The intended audience of the conference is: archivists,
librarians, and conservators with preservation tasks, preservation
managers of archives and libraries, directors, administrators and
government officials responsible for cultural heritage issues.

    EURO 70 (registration until 30 April 2002)
    EURO 100 (registration after 30 April)
    Excursion EURO 20
