SOLINET workshops

SOLINET, Inc., the Southeastern Library Network, is pleased to
announce our Spring Preservation Workshops (Please excuse
cross-posting):

Audiovisual Collection Management

    This one-day session will be held Thursday, May 23, 2002 at the
    University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY from 9am - 4pm.

    This session will concentrate on the principles and practices of
    managing equipment-dependent magnetic media, motion picture
    film, and mechanical sound recording collections. Topics
    include: preservation activities for sight and sound recordings,
    appraisal considerations, and guidelines for care, handling, and
    storage. Attendees are invited to bring in equipment and/or
    recording media for discussion and identification during the
    session. Instructor of the session is Alan Lewis, Audiovisual
    Preservation Expert in the Special Media Archives Services
    Division, National Archives and Records Administration.

    Cost for $95 SOLINET members, all membership categories, ($85
    early bird, $120 late registration); $135 Non-SOLINET members
    ($125 early bird, $160 late registration). Any institution
    within Kentucky qualifies for the member rate.

Environmental Control and Monitoring: Preserving Collections in a
Hostile Environment

    Monday, May 13, 2002 at the Historic New Orlenas Collection, New
    Orleans, LA from 9am - 4 pm.

    The most cost-effective strategy to preserve our documentary
    resources is by controlling temperature, relative humidity, and
    pollutants. This workshop will help library staff identify the
    source of problems, monitor the environment, and develop
    strategies for affecting change in their institution. It will
    include an extensive packet of resource materials, plus exhibits
    of state-of-the-art monitoring equipment. Instructor is Dr.
    Michael Trinkley, Director of Chicora Foundation.

    Cost for $95 SOLINET members, all membership categories, ($85
    early bird, $120 late registration); $135 Non-SOLINET members
    ($125 early bird, $160 late registration). Any institution
    within Louisiana qualifies for the member rate.

Fundamentals of Book Repair

    Tuesday-Wednesday, May 7-8, 2002 at Duke University, Durham, NC
    from 8:30 am - 5 pm.

    This two-day workshop is designed for staff members who perform
    book repair in libraries and those who supervise repair units.
    The workshop teaches simple, economical, and preservation
    quality repairs for materials in general, circulating and
    reference collections. The procedures covered are tightening
    hinges, endsheet replacement, spine replacement, paper mending,
    tip-ins and hinge-ins.

    The workshop will *not* cover techniques for the repair of
    materials that are special, rare, or archival. Instructors are
    Christine Wiseman, SOLINET Preservation Education Officer and
    Tina Mason, SOLINET Preservation Field Services Officer.

    Cost is $155 SOLINET members, all membership categories, ($145
    early bird, $180 late registration); $195 Non-SOLINET members,
    ($185 early bird, $220 late registration). Any institution
    within North Carolina qualifies for the member rate.

    Note: This workshop is co-sponsored by the North Carolina
    Preservation Consortium (NCPC).  NCPC members may request
    reimbursement for half of the registration fee.  For more

Hurricane Preparedness: Surviving the Big One

    This workshop is scheduled for, Tuesday, June 11, 2002 at the
    Tower Road Branch Library, Gainesville, FL from 9 am - 4 pm.

    Learn about steps that can be taken before a storm hits that can
    increase an institution's chances for minimizing damage; and
    steps that can be taken to minimize loss after a storm. This one
    and a half day workshop focuses on the nature of hurricanes,
    general issues in developing a disaster plan, making your
    institution storm-proof, activities before, during and after the
    storm, and sources of assistance. Instructor for this session is
    Dr. Michael Trinkley, Director of Chicora Foundation.

    Cost for $95 SOLINET members, all membership categories, ($85
    early bird, $120 late registration); $135 Non-SOLINET members
    ($125 early bird, $160 late registration). Any institution
    within Florida qualifies for the member rate.  NOTE: Members of
    the Northeast Florida Library Information Network (NEFLIN)
    should register directly with NEFLIN.
