The Queensland Art Gallery has a temporary vacancy for a Paper
Conservator. The position is full time and is available from 15
March 2002 until 14 February 2003 while an officer is on leave.

The Queensland Art Gallery forms a major part of the Queensland
Cultural Centre and is the State's most important resource for the
visual arts. The Government announcement of the construction of a
new Queensland Gallery of Modern Art as an expansion of the
Queensland Art Gallery and due to open in 2005, provides the
platform for exciting program development opportunities, encouraging
patronage and ushering in a new era in public programming and
access.  The Gallery currently has a staff of 120. In addition, an
extensive volunteer guide program exists. The gallery undertakes a
regional exhibition program as well as offering professional
services throughout the State.

Duties of this position are: to undertake conservation activities
related to the care, display, storage, treatment, use and transport
of works on paper in the Queensland Art Gallery collection under the
direction of the Head of Conservation. To coordinate and document
the activities of the paper Conservation section with the support of
a Conservation Technical Assistant (Mountcutting), Technical
Assistants and an Administrative Assistant, Conservation. Give
advice on the suitability of works on paper for loan and undertake
subsequent preparations. Undertake technical examination and
research relevant to the collection and make recommendations in
regard to issues of preventive conservation. The ability to
undertake treatment work with minimal supervision is essential as
there is only one paper conservator on staff.

The successful candidate will possess a degree or relevant
qualification in Paper Conservation. At least 2 years work
experience in the field of paper conservation and an interest in
photographic conservation are desirable.
