The NCSU Libraries invites applications and nominations for the
newly established position of Collection Conservator.  Based in the
Preservation Department, this position will lead the Libraries in
establishing a comprehensive collection conservation program with an
emphasis on the working collection.  The Preservation Department is
strongly committed to developing preservation initiatives that will
address the long-term preservation needs of all formats, including
the Libraries' collection of three million volumes.  The department
(7 FTE plus students) includes a collection conservation unit, a
commercial binding unit, and a shelf preparation unit.  The
Collection Conservator will be responsible for the daily operations
of the collection conservation unit and will assist the Head of
Preservation in planning and implementing a new collection
conservation facility.

Responsibilities:  Plans, coordinates, and oversees the evaluation
and treatment of the Libraries' general collection materials.  Works
closely with collection managers and public services librarians to
develop treatment priorities.  Hires, trains, and supervises two
full-time conservation technicians and one FTE student assistant in
all aspects of collection conservation.  Establishes appropriate
quality control measures for completed treatments and maintains
statistics for the collection conservation unit.  Assists the Head
of Preservation with needs assessment and program planning, staff
and user education, disaster planning, and special projects as
needed.  Works with counterparts in the Triangle Research Libraries
Network (TRLN) to further the development of cooperative programs.
Serves on library-wide committees, task forces, and teams.
Librarians at the NCSU Libraries are expected to be active
professionally and to contribute to developments in the field.
Reports to the Head of Preservation.

Qualifications:  Required: ALA-accredited MLS. Extensive knowledge
of current conservation principles, practices, and procedures
related to the preservation of library collections.  Demonstrated
experience with treatment decision-making.  Ability to work
independently and productively in a complex, changing organization.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Preferred: Ability to advise on issues related to the conservation
treatment of special collections materials.  Prior supervisory
experience strongly preferred.

Salary and Benefits:  The Libraries offers a competitive salary
commensurate with experience, not less than $35,000 for this
position. Librarians have academic status without tenure or rank.
Benefits include: 24 days vacation, 12 days sick leave;
comprehensive major medical insurance, and state, TIAA/CREF or other
retirement options. Additional and optional dental, life,
disability, deferred compensation, and legal plans are available.
Tuition waiver program for all campuses of The University of North
Carolina is available. Relocation allowance.
