Subject: Mold on mummy
I'm doing a collections survey in the St. Petersburg, Florida Museum of History where an Egyptian mummy has been displayed since 1925. The bare, resin(?) impregnated female mummy (there are remains of a winding textile, but not in this area) lays in an open coffin covered with a plexiglas lid. The toes and lower legs of the mummy exhibit a white mold. The entire gallery smells musty, although there are enclosed administrative areas that do not. What can be done to remove the mold and prevent a re-occurance? The museum is planning an enlargement this summer and will replace the current environmental controls.
