Before and After: Conserving the Past at Colonial Williamsburg

Nov 8-10, 2001

The symposium will examine the rapidly developing field of
collections conservation through a series of lectures, case studies
and tours. Attendees will learn about the way in which Colonial
Williamsburg's staff of specialist conservators approaches the basic
care, study and conservation of a wide range of historic
collections--including everything from archaeological artifacts to
fine arts, furniture and textiles. There will also be the
opportunity to see ongoing projects and meet with individual
conservators while touring of the Foundation's state-of-the-art
DeWitt Wallace Collections and Conservation Building.

A special feature of the program will be the keynote address by Dr.
Joyce Hill Stoner of Winterthur Museum, entitled "Adventures in
Looking at Historic Paintings: From the Fogg Museum to the Antiques
Roadshow". To learn more about the symposium, I invite you to click
on to the link at the bottom of this message.

Please Note: The Williamsburg Institute is currently offering a
special reduced registration fee of $110 to affiliates of
organizations and institutions related to the museum, preservation
and conservation fields. A nominal registration fee of $25 is
available to currently-enrolled students of art, art history, the
sciences, conservation and related fields.

We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to gain insight
into the careful approaches and fascinating techniques used by
conservators to preserve our material heritage, and we look forward
to seeing you at Colonial Williamsburg November 8-10.

F. Carey Howlett
Director of Conservation
The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation
