Subject: Publication on preventive conservation strategies
The document "Towards a European Preventive Conservation Strategy" has recently been published. A meeting at the EVTEK Institute of Art and Design, in Vantaa, Finland, in September 2000 produced the document. The meeting involved participants from 23 European nations. The participants were conservators and administrators from national museums, conservation institutes and government ministries. The document refers primarily to preventive conservation in museums. The Vantaa Document gives a framework for developing strategy in individual nations or in Europe as a whole. It consists of five themes under which strategy is necessary. Each theme is accompanied by four or five more detailed recommendations, originating from the individual experiences of the meeting participants in their home nations. There are also 8 recommendations for immediate action at the European level. The European Preventive Conservation Strategy project was co-ordinated by EVTEK, the Portuguese Institute for Conservation and Restoration, the Ministry of Culture of Hungary, the Direction des Musies de France and The International Centre for the Study of the Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM), The Vantaa Document is available on-line at a site developed by EVTEK <URL:http://www.pc-strat.com/>, also accessible via ICCROM (<URL:http://www.iccrom.org>). Both the on-line publication and versions on paper have been done in numerous languages. Copies in French and English are available from ICCROM (publication [at] iccrom__org) and EVTEK (heikki.hayha [at] iad__evtek__fi). There are also a few copies of the final report of the European Preventive Conservation Strategy Project. The 230-page report gives background information on preventive conservation in Europe and on the project itself.
