Internship programs

The Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory, located at the
Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum in St. Leonard, MD, is applying
for an IMLS grant to fund internship stipends. For supporting
documentation, we need input from conservation training programs
about the design of the internship program.

The MAC Lab is Maryland's central repository for the conservation,
storage and investigation of state-owned archaeological collections.
The program is for 12 months during the student's conservation
degree program. The intern will work full time with the
conservation staff on collections conservation assessments,
environmental monitoring, materials analysis, documentation, and
object treatments. They will received specialized training in lab
and chemical safety, equipment use, and analytical techniques.
Archaeological objects treated at the MAC Lab range from prehistoric
ceramics and lithics to 19th century farm equipment. There is an
emphasis on the treatment of objects from waterlogged sites,
including ship's timbers, cannon, and small organic or metal items.
The intern will be required to undertake one special research
project that can be prepared for publication.

The IMLS funding will be used to match funds provided by the student
or home institution to provide a stipend competitive with annual
internships at other conservation facilities.

If you have any students interested in this type of opportunity, or
if you have experience in designing such a program that you would be
willing to share, please contact Howard Wellman at the phone or
email listed below for more complete details, and to provide us with
your feedback on this program. We are trying to get this information
together in time to meet the IMLS October 31 deadline (yikes!)
