Scientific Program: Consolidation is a common type of intervention
often necessary in the stabilization of porous building materials.
The need for consolidation results from the assessment of the site
conditions. This should include input from all disciplines involved
in the conservation of monuments: art historians, architects,
conservation scientists and conservators. Once the need has been
identified, the selection of the consolidant should be determined
through a careful methodology that includes analysis, testing and
evaluation of results. It is crucial to consider not only the
interaction between the porous substrate and the consolidant but
also the environment surrounding the heritage in consideration. The
Congress will focus on the recent and somehow controversial spread
of silicates and silicones based materials used for the conservation
of cultural properties. The debate will focus on the experience and
issues regarding the use of silica based treatments, as well as on
methodology and approach. The main objective is to provide a forum
for conservators and scientists to share and discuss their
experience and results as well as identify areas in need of further
research.

The Program is composed of three main sessions. Each session will be
introduced by a keynote speaker and will include oral presentations
and a poster session. Preference will be given to papers that focus
on laboratory research resulting in practical field application.
Congress official languages are Italian and English: simultaneous
translation will be provided.

The registration fee of Euro 216 (Euro 180 + V.A.T. 20%) must be
paid within the deadline of January 10, 2002. It includes book of
abstracts, congress kit, attendance certificate, coffee breaks and
lunches on Wednesday 13th and Thursday 14th. For any other meal at
Villa Gualino self-service a coupon is to be bought at Lit. 20.000
each at the congress reception. Registrations not corresponding to a
payment by January 10, 2002 will not be considered.

Call For Papers

Instructions for abstract preparation: Those participants who wish
to present a case study are invited to submit an abstract (according
to the editorial rules which follow) only in electronic format. It
is possible to send the text as attached file addressed to
mail [at] fobiotech__org or send a floppy disk (do not use floppy
formatted in Macintosh format) to the organising committee:

    Fondazione per le Biotecnologie
    Villa Gualino
    Viale Settimio Severo, 63
    10133 Torino, Italy

Editorial Rules: For the editorial procedure we can handle only
files saved in Microsoft Word format. Please save the files as Word
5, Word 6, or, as second choice, as RTF format. Do not use Word 8
format, Word 2000 nor Macintosh. In case your text contains symbols
or Greek letters, please fax or post an hard copy to the organising
secretariat.

The two A4 page abstract should be prepared as follow: margins of
2.5 cm on the top and the bottom, of 3 cm on the left and 2.5 on the
right. The font should be Times New Roman size 12, spacing 1, fully
justified.

    1. The title of the abstract should be put in capital letters
and bold style. Name of the authors should follow on a
separate line (in bold). On a separate line put the full
address of the principal investigator including fax number
and e-mail. The text of the abstract will follow after one
        line spacing.

    2. References in the text should be indicated by numbers in
square brackets. After the text of your abstract put, on a
separate line, Reference List (in capital and bold, size
10). The references should be numbered. Please use size 10
and spacing 1 for the reference list.

    3. Graphs, greytone (not color) pictures and tables can be
included in the electronic document but in this case it is
essential here that a clean copy is also transmitted on
paper using courier or fast mail, so that it can be used if
the electronic version cannot be properly recognised.

The deadline for submission is November 30, 2001.

Authors will be notified by December 15, 2001. The abstracts not
selected for the oral presentations will be presented as posters in
the related sessions. Oral presentations will not exceed the
duration of 20 minutes (15 minutes for the presentation and 5
minutes for the discussion). The maximum accepted format for the
posters is 90 cm (width) X 110 cm (height); (portrait format). The
book of abstracts will be distributed during the congress to all
participants.

For proceedings' publication, all authors are requested to submit
the final paper (not more than 10 A4 pages) to the organising
committee during the Congress. Papers will be selected by referees
designated by the scientific committee. More information will be
given in next communications.
