Edmund Scientific has what they call a "Electroluminescence Back
Lighting Panel."  In their 1999 catalog, it comes in green or white
light, 5 x 8 inches for $150.  This is a custom kit so you will need
to make a frame, but even with the cost of the frame you could save
a couple hundred dollars.
