Description of Work: Position plans, directs, and oversees a
comprehensive preservation program for the archives and records
section. Includes responsibilities for all components of
preservation, including but not limited to collection assessment and
storage; environmental monitoring and evaluation; collections
security; holdings maintenance; testing of supplies; disaster
mitigation, preparedness and response; development of policies and
standards for storage of paper and non-textual materials including
digital image preservation; conservation treatment; preservation
reformatting; staff and public preservation education;
identification of holdings for reformatting and digitization; grant
development and management for preservation initiatives; oversight
of vendor services for conservation treatment and rebinding; and
integrated pest management. Employee also directly supervises the
collections management branch comprised of the section's
conservation lab, photo lab, and imaging unit. Oversees activities
and work of section's preservation and access taskforce and disaster
response team, and provides consultative outreach to public
officials and agencies needing assistance with disaster plans,
response, and recovery.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Applicant should demonstrate
knowledge of current developments and best practices in preservation
and conservation of paper and non-textual media; possess knowledge
of the chemical nature of archival materials; thorough understanding
of archival and records management principles; substantial knowledge
of micrographics; digital imaging, and traditional photography
including knowledge of micrographics systems, and application of
digital imaging and filming for reformatting purposes. Ability to
plan develop,implement, monitor, and evaluate projects. Capability
to hire, train, coach, delegate to, and supervise staff and their
activities. Ability to use software such as microsoft word, excel,
and access, and database software related to preservation. Excellent
oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work
effectively with agency staff, public officials, and the general
public. Capacity to work independently and exercise sound judgment
in program management.

Training and Experience: Graduation from a four-year college or
university with a major in history, library science, or a related
social science and four years of progressive experience in archives
and records work, preferably with one year in an advanced,
specialized or supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of
training and experience. Prefer additional directly related
education and experience as specified in the knowledge, skills and
abilities and description of work sections above.
