Training opportunity

The Society of Archivists Conservation Board of Studies is pleased
to announce that it is able to offer training placements as single
modules to conservators wishing to learn any of the following
archive conservation subjects:

    Introduction to Archive Conservation
    Conservation of Paper Archives
    Conservation of Parchment
    Conservation of Maps and Plans
    Conservation of Seals
    Archive Bookbinding and Book Conservation

The training placements vary in length depending upon the subject
and may be adjusted according to the existing knowledge and
experience of trainees. The range is from 2 weeks to 8 weeks.
Training takes place under a Society Certificated Instructor at an
Approved Instructing Office, usually a local government record
office.

The cost of training placements is UKP 250 per placement enrolment
fee plus UKP 50 per week to cover equipment and materials used at
the instructing office. Accommodation is not provided.

The training is one-to-one teaching about archive materials, their
context and use in archive offices, their preservation needs and
modern methods of conservation treatment. Trainees learn to
evaluate conservation problems, identify and describe conservation
strategies, implement remedial treatments and safe handling and
protective preservation methods.

The courses are offered both as short internship placements for
recently trained conservators seeking specialist training, and as an
opportunity for experienced conservators to develop a new area of
related expertise or as a refresher.

In addition, the Board continues to offer a biannual week of
lectures on archive conservation and a biannual conservation
chemistry residential course. The full Conservation Training
Scheme, involving all the courses described, leading to the Society
of Archivists Certificate in Archive Conservation is also still
offered.
