North Carolina Library Association Biennial Conference Winston-Salem, North Carolina Wednesday, October 3, 2001, 2:30 pm Dr. Abby Smith will discuss the value of preserving library collections as artifacts for education and research. Holding various positions in libraries and research institutions for the past twenty years, Dr. Smith is presently director of programs at the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) in Washington DC. She is responsible for developing and managing collaborative projects with library and archival institutions to ensure long term access to our cultural and scholarly heritage. Her work encompasses all formats, from traditional print, to audiovisual, to electronic media. "The Evidence at Hand: The Report of the Task Force on the Artifact in Library Collections" is available at <URL:http://www.clir.org/activities/details/artifact-docs.html> Robert James, President of The North Carolina Preservation Consortium (NCPC), will also provide an overview of cooperative preservation in North Carolina. Topics will include collection care, disaster preparedness, conservation, reformatting, security, and preservation management. Participants are encouraged to share their preservation challenges and offer suggestions for future NCPC programs and projects.
