Subject: Call for papers--Synchrotron radiation
Institute of Conservation Science: Meeting Announcement and Call for Papers Synchrotron Radiation: The Potential for Conservation Science Daresbury Laboratory, Warrington, Cheshire WA4 4AD, UK September 6, 2001 This meeting is intended to provide an opportunity for conservation scientists and conservators to discover more about the potential of synchrotron based and other modern analytical techniques that are rarely used in conservation science. It will provide an excellent forum to explore the potential of such techniques with the scientists who use them. A wide range of analytical techniques based on synchrotron radiation are employed at the Daresbury laboratory to study the composition and structure of a wide range of materials. Techniques include X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, X-ray absorption spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy which can provide, often non-destructively, information about mineralogical and elemental composition, crystallographic structure and oxidation state determination with excellent spatial resolution and rapid data collection. For further details on SR applications in cultural heritage research see <URL:http://srs.dl.ac.uk/arch/>. Both oral and poster presentations are invited. Presentations which describe current problems in conservation science which conventional analytical approaches have proved unable to solve would be particularly welcome. If you would like to give an oral or poster presentation, please send a short abstract by e-mail to Paul Wilthew or Siobhan Watts at the address below. The meeting is open to all, but places must be booked in advance. The meeting is free to Institute of Conservation Science members. There will be a UKP10 fee for non-members. Please contact Paul Wilthew at p.wilthew [at] nms__co__uk or Siobhan Watts at swatts [at] nmgmcc5__demon__co__uk by e-mail to register your interest in attending the meeting and to receive further information. All communication will be by e-mail to minimise costs. As they become available further details will also be posted at <URL:http://www.InstituteofConservationScience.org.uk/>.
