Book Collections Maintenance and Repair Workshop Campbell Center for Historic Preservation Studies Jul 18, 2001 Instructor: Susan Hansen Preservation Dept University of Iowa Libraries Prerequisite: Experience in bookbinding and repair Friends Scholarships Available This four-day hands-on workshop is intended for library staff who repair damaged volumes from circulating collections. The course is based on instructions from the Book Repair Procedure Manual prepared by the University of Iowa Libraries' Conservation Department. In order to be effective, collections maintenance repair must be quick, simple, and inexpensive, without sacrificing good workmanship and materials. The course will focus on the repair of cloth bound trade and publishers bindings and will provide hands-on experience. Topics will include: 1. Orientation to the scope of book collections maintenance techniques and methods of selection and processing of items for repair; 2. Equipment, ergonomics, and safety in the book repair facility; 3. Relevant techniques from bindery practice, including double fan adhesive binding and replacement paper copy production; 4. Relevant techniques from book conservation practice, including protective enclosures, exhibition support, paper mending techniques and materials, text consolidation and reinforcement of leaf attachment, and the reinforcement of the cover; 5. Productivity of the book repair facility. Participants are encouraged to bring examples of specific problems for discussion and workshop sessions.
