Integrating Conservation into the Exhibit Process
Minneapolis Institute of Arts
June 28-29, 2001

The Upper Midwest Conservation Association, Field Services
Department is pleased to announce the upcoming workshop: Integrating
Conservation into the Exhibit Process. The topics of this workshop
will be covered over the course of two days. During this time,
participants will learn about the issues behind conservation and
exhibit design. They will be given information on resources and
elements needed to implement a conservation plan for exhibits. They
will also learn the specifics of exhibit lighting, environmental
control, appropriate mounting and the final installation. At the
workshop's completion, participants should have a clear idea of the
steps needed and issues to consider when incorporating conservation
into an exhibit.

Two conservators from the National Park Service will be heading the
workshop. They are Larry Bowers and Toby Raphael. Mr. Bowers is an
Objects Conservator with special interests in exhibit lighting. He
recently designed the lighting for the new exhibit of the
Declaration of Independence. Mr. Raphael is an Ethnographic
Conservator and Conservation Coordinator for National Park site
exhibits. He recently produced a set of conservation guidelines
available on CD through the park service. Together, the two have
co-organized international symposiums on lighting for the National
Archives and the American Institute for Conservation.

This workshop will be comprehensive in nature, but is designed for a
broad audience from novices to seasoned professionals. The workshop
will be held at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts on June 28 - 29,
2001. Workshop registration fees are $150 for UMCA members and $200
for nonmembers plus $40 toward the purchase of the National Park
Service's CD-ROM "Exhibit Conservation Guidelines." For more
