NEH-Funded Preservation Microfilming Project
(Temporary Position through April 2004)

The Columbia University Libraries seek a cataloger with strong
analytical and problem-solving skills to catalog preservation
microfilms in Russian and other Slavic languages for an NEH grant
project.  Reporting to the Head of Original and Special Materials
Cataloging, the incumbent will provide full (or other appropriate
level) original cataloging for microfilms in Russian and other
Slavic languages.  This position has responsibility for coordinating
the cataloging workflow for preservation microfilms.  This position
will also provide quality control of vendor-supplied cataloging and
provide consultation and advice on cataloging issues to project
staff.

The Original and Special Materials Cataloging Department (14.5
professionals and 12 support staff) provides cataloging for all
serials, non-book formats and electronic resources, and specialized
materials such as rare books, Middle East languages, art and
architecture, as well as original cataloging for all subjects and
formats.

Requirements are:  accredited MLS; working knowledge of cataloging
principles and procedures including AACR2R, LC Subject Headings and
Classification, and MARC 21 formats; working knowledge of standard
bibliographic and other reference tools; strong working knowledge of
Russian and one other Slavic language; and familiarity with a range
of automated processing activities.  Additional requirements include
effective verbal and written communication skills; good
organizational skills; and aptitude for complex, analytical and
detailed work.  Highly desirable qualifications include previous
cataloging experience at a professional level; experience with
NOTIS, OCLC and/or RLIN; experience in a large research library;
subject background in Slavic studies; and knowledge of additional
Slavic languages.

Salary ranges are:  Librarian I: $39,000-$48,750; Librarian II:
$41,000-$55,350; Librarian III: $44,000-$66,000. Excellent benefits
