Subject: Position in Conchopata, Peru
Summer Position in Archaeological Conservation Conchopata, Peru Seeking objects conservator with training and/or experience with a broad range of archaeological materials. Materials found at the site include metals, ceramics, bone, walls of stone and adobe, mortar, wood, thatch and other organic fibers, usually burned, and including textile fragments). The single greatest activity in 2001 will probably involve work with giant ceramic vessels, painted with elaborate polychrome designs before they were deliberately smashed. Time: The project is scheduled from the second week of June, 2001 through the third week of August, 2001. However, our needs well be greatest from about the beginning of July though the first or second week of August. We need a commitment for a period of a 4 weeks or more. Location: Central highlands of Peru. We are excavating the small Middle Horizon city of Conchopata, located on the outskirts of the modern city of Ayacucho, about 2750 m above sea level. Members of our group share a nine-room residence near the center of town, and work at the site, in the patio-lab of our residence, and at the archaeology laboratory of the Universidad de Huamanga. Conditions: The project expects to pay transportation, room and board for the conservation specialist. Unfortunately we do not have sufficient funds for salaries.
