Summer Position in Archaeological Conservation
Conchopata, Peru

Seeking objects conservator with training and/or experience with a
broad range of archaeological materials. Materials found at the site
include metals, ceramics, bone, walls of stone and adobe, mortar,
wood, thatch and other organic fibers, usually burned, and including
textile fragments). The single greatest activity in 2001 will
probably involve work with giant ceramic vessels, painted with
elaborate polychrome designs before they were deliberately smashed.

Time: The project is scheduled from the second week of June, 2001
through the third week of August, 2001. However, our needs well be
greatest from about the beginning of July though the first or second
week of August. We need a commitment for a period of a 4 weeks or
more.

Location: Central highlands of Peru. We are excavating the small
Middle Horizon city of Conchopata, located on the outskirts of the
modern city of Ayacucho, about 2750 m above sea level. Members of
our group share a nine-room residence near the center of town, and
work at the site, in the patio-lab of our residence, and at the
archaeology laboratory of the Universidad de Huamanga.

Conditions: The project expects to pay transportation, room and
board for the conservation specialist. Unfortunately we do not have
sufficient funds for salaries. We must have a commitment from you
for at least 4 weeks, preferably longer.
