Band 5 Conservation Scientist The British Museum Salary in the range 20000 - 24000 UK pounds This post is located in the Conservation Research Group of the Department of Conservation. The post holder reports to the Head of Group. The staff of the Group work on all types of objects in the collection, carrying out scientific investigations and research to determine deterioration mechanisms, develop and evaluate conservation methods and materials, analyse objects to facilitate conservation; and devise preventive conservation strategies for collection care. The successful candidate will be mainly involved in the evaluation of methods and materials for conservation, and research into the deterioration of organic materials found in the collections. He/she will carry out analysis of objects, and be involved in the training of staff and students. The Group disseminates its work through publication and lecturing; and is involved in the development of public access programmes involving science and collection care. The post holder will be expected to participate in these activities, and to play a full part in planning for the move of the Department of Conservation to the British Museum Study Centre. Qualifications and experience: The successful candidate will have a good degree (minimum 2:1) in a chemistry or polymer related subject and five years of experience, or a PhD in a chemistry, polymer science, or conservation research subject. Previous experience in the conservation field is desirable, but not essential.
