West Dean College The Edward James Foundation The Care and Conservation of Wallcoverings June 17-22, 2001 Course Leader: Allyson McDermott, conservator and consultant, Director of Conservation Studio, Battery House, Petworth. Tutors include: Anthony Wells-Cole, Senior Curator, Temple Newsam House; Christine Woods, Curator; Whitworth Art Gallery and David Dorning, Conservation Science Tutor, West Dean College. A course intended for practising professionals responsible for the care and conservation of wall coverings, for example, planning officers, architects and conservation officers, curators and conservators. The intention is to provide a stimulating event that will concentrate on the common issues relating to wall coverings such as printed, painted and stencilled wallpapers, Lincrusta, Anyglypta, Linoleum, decorative fabrics and leather. It will not include wall hangings such as tapestries, drapes, screens or wall paintings. The programme covers: historical background/survey of wall coverings, technology of production and fabrication, identification of the support and surface coatings by simple practical and chemical tests, examination using polarised light microscopy, recording, monitoring, diagnosis and treatment options from cleaning to repair. The course will include a mixture of lectures, case studies and specialist visits to the Royal Pavilion at Brighton and Petworth House, with a good proportion of time spent on demonstrations and practical exercises.
