Building Conservation Masterclasses
April 3 - 6, 2001 Conservation and Repair of Plasters and Renders
Course Leader: John Ashurst
Principal Tutor: Colin Burns

Rendered and plastered masonry and timber-framed buildings with
rendered infill panels form a very important part of our
historic and traditional building stock; repair and maintenance
can be a major problem and remedial work and specification is
often of poor quality. This unique course covers history,
documentation, condition survey, repair options, specifications,
execution and quality control of remedial works to lime, gypsum
and cement-based internal and external wall plasters and
renders, from roughcast to stucco and including plain, moulded,
modelled and cast work, with practical workshop exercises.

May 1 - 4, 2001 Conservation and repair of brick and terracotta
    masonry
Course Leader: John Ashurst
Principal Tutor: Colin Burns
Guest Tutor: Gerard Lynch, Historic Brickwork Consultant and author
of seminal works Gauged Brickwork and Brickwork, History, Technology
and Practice.

The course describes and illustrates the use of brick and
terracotta over the last two thousand years, concentrating
particularly on British examples; it covers traditional
manufacturing processes and the nature and characteristics of
bricks, terracottas and their traditional mortars; survey
techniques and repair schedules; remedial work on joints,
replacement and surface repairs; cleaning and surface treatment
and preparation of specifications. There are practical sessions
on joints and repair techniques. One day's tuition on gauged
brickwork, led by Gerard Lynch, will take place at the Weald and
Downland Open Air Museum, using its brick teaching collection.
