Preservation Scientist (DuPont Fellow)
National Center for Preservation Technology and Training (NCPTT)

The National Center for Preservation Technology and Training (NCPTT)
and Northwestern State University seek a Ph.D. chemist or equivalent
to fill a joint-research position for one year, with option for
renewal for a second year. Experience in environmental science
and/or preservation preferred. The incumbent will perform research
at NCPTT focusing on deposition of sulfur dioxide to natural and
treated stone.

The incumbent will develop or continue a research project under the
direction of the NCPTT Environmental and Materials Research Program
Manager that investigates the potential of newly formulated water
repellents for limestone, marble, and sandstone to limit deposition
of air pollutants onto stone surfaces. The deposition velocity of
sulfur dioxide to stone surfaces will be measured using the National
Center for Preservation Technology and Training's (NCPTT)
Environmental Exposure Facility. Products to be tested are under
development by DuPont Corporation. Samples will be treated with
various water repellents and exposed under ambient conditions
similar to those found in an urban environment within the Eastern
United States. The incumbent will supervise an undergraduate
research intern during summer months.

We offer the successful candidate a unique opportunity to apply
science to the preservation of cultural resources. Interested
applicants should submit cover letter, curriculum vitae,
transcripts, and references to:
