Fellowship at Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna

From: Martina Griesser <martina.griesser>
Date: Thursday, March 15, 2001
Organic chemist/conservation scientist
Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna

The conservation science department of the KHM is looking for an
organic chemist to support the initial stages of introducing organic
analysis of samples of works of art by instrumental analytical
methods. In co-operation with the Scientific Department of the
Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, and the Institute for Analytical
Chemistry, Vienna University of Technology, investigation procedures
should be developed and optimised primarily for the needs of the
museums collection. The KHM holds very wide ranging collections of
European old master paintings, ancient and Egyptian art, European
sculpture and decorative art, coins, textiles and tapestries,
historical musical instruments, coaches, arms and armour, and the
treasury. The need of investigations concerning the organic
materials in binding media, varnishes, adhesives, consolidants,
lacquers, surface coatings,... has increased considerably. The
conservation science department--founded in 1997 - plans therefore
to build up a reliable organic analysis section to carry out
research within this field in the near future.

The applicant must have a master degree or PhD in organic chemistry,
preferably analytical chemistry, and should ideally have some
experience in the organic analysis of historic binding media (e.g.
resins, oils, proteins,...) or similar topics. Experience with some
of the following analytical techniques is an absolute requirement:
Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC), High Performance Liquid
Chromatography (HPLC), Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS),
and Fourier-Transform-Infrared-Spectroscopy (FT-IR).

Duration of the fellowship: starting from May 2001 until end of
December 2001

Salary: ATS 15.000,-/Euro 1.090,- gross (ATS 12.975,-/Euro 943,- net
income) per calendar month

Applicants should send their documents (including CV and publication
list (if available)) as soon as possible to:
