NEH Preservation Assistance Grants

The application deadline for the National Endowment for the
Humanities Preservation Assistance Grants is April 3, 2001. This is
a receipt deadline. Grants up to $5000 will be awarded to enhance
the capacity of libraries, archives, museums, and historical
organizations to preserve collections of books, journals, manuscript
and archival materials, maps, still and moving images, oral
histories, recorded sound, and objects of material culture.

Awards will be made nationwide, but special consideration will be
given to applicants in jurisdictions that have been identified as
underserved by the Endowment. These jurisdictions include: Alabama,
Alaska, Florida, Idaho, Louisiana, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, North
Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Puerto Rico, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming.
Last year, NEH received 179 applications and made grants to 132
institutions in 41 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of

Institutions may request support for the following activities: 1)
General preservation or conservation assessments that will help an
institution identify its overall preservation needs and develop a
long-range, prioritized preservation plan to address those needs; 2)
Consultations with preservation professionals to develop a specific
plan for addressing a previously identified problem; 3) Attendance
at preservation workshops; and 4) The purchase of preservation
supplies, equipment, and storage furniture. Applicants who request
funding for the purchase of storage furniture must demonstrate that
the request is based on a completed preservation needs assessment or
a specialized consultation with a preservation professional.
