Removing labels from book spines

I am assisting with the library at the Ski Club of Great Britain.
the library contains some very valuable books. In the past, someone
has stuck brightly coloured labels on the book spines. They are
bright red, blue, orange, yellow etc and are unsightly. We would
like to remove the labels with damaging the books. Any ideas would
be most welcome. With anticipated thanks
